Oman has begun construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in the northern port of Sohar, which its sponsors say is one of the lowest emission plants in the world.

TotalEnergies of France holds an 80 percent stake in the $1.6 billion Marsa scheme while OQ Exploration & Production has the remaining 20 percent, the official Oman News Agency said on Thursday.

The plant will be powered entirely by a 300MW solar power facility, “making it the world’s lowest emission LNG facility”, the news agency said.

TotatEnergies says the plant will generate less than 3 kg CO2e/per barrel of oil equivalent (boe). This is 90 percent lower than the average carbon intensity of LNG plants in the world, which stands at around 35 kg CO2e/boe, according to the French major.

TotalEnergies is also a small shareholder in Oman’s three-train Qalhat LNG scheme which is being expanded to produce an additional 3.8 million metric tonnes per annum.

Marsa LNG will be supported by upstream gas production of 150 million cubic feet per day sourced from the Mabrouk north-east field.

The downstream component features an LNG liquefaction plant that will produce 1 million tonnes of LNG annually, scheduled to begin in early 2028.

The facility will also feature a 165,000 cubic metres storage tank which will supply container ships, tankers and cruise ships with low emission LNG fuel.

Once ready, it will be the first LNG bunkering hub in the Middle East, the news agency said.
