Egypt plans fertiliser complex with help from China and Italy

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi meeting executives of Wuhan Engineering and Ballestra on establishing a new fertiliser complex

Egypt will build a third industrial fertiliser production complex in Ain Sokhna in cooperation with Chinese and Italian companies.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi met and discussed with executives of China’s Wuhan Engineering Co. and Italy’s Ballestra on establishing the industrial complex, the president’s office said in a statement.

“The meeting discussed the ongoing cooperation with the Chinese and Italian companies to immediately begin the establishment of the third industrial fertiliser production complex in Ain Sokhna,” the presidency spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.

El-Sisi inaugurated the phosphatic and compound fertilisers complex in August 2019, followed by the nitrogenous fertiliser complex in March 2023.

The president directed the government to continue its efforts to localise fertiliser production, as it is one of the most important inputs for agricultural production, which affects food security, the statement said.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said last week that the government is weighing plans to build three new free zones to stimulate foreign direct investments.

The new free zones will be established in Alexandria, the 10th of Ramadan and the 6th of October cities.
