Dubai state-owned real estate developer Wasl has installed more than 22,000 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels across its 44 buildings and facilities, adding 11 GWh annually to the emirate’s grid capacity.

The developer says the solar energy will offset 4,500 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, driving sustainability across Wasl’s communities.

It says the carbon offsets will equal taking 2,200 cars off the road or providing a year’s worth of energy for 900 Dubai homes.

The project to retrofit a wide range of Wasl’s properties with solar panels was undertaken in collaboration with Etihad Energy Services Company. It aligns with UAE’s net zero goals and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.

Salem Al Nuaimi, acting director of asset management services and solutions at Wasl, said the company’s aim to develop “one of the largest on-grid solar PV projects” supports the UAE’s agenda to deliver clean energy without damaging the environment.

The Cop28 climate conference will be held in Dubai Expo City from November 30 to December 12.
