Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman named prime minister

The normalisation of ties with Canada comes as the Saudi Crown Prince seeks to reassert the kingdom as a regional power

Saudi King Salman has appointed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as prime minister as part of a cabinet reshuffle, state-owned SPA news agency reported.

As part of the reshuffle, Prince Khalid bin Salman will become defence minister, while Yousef bin Abdullah Al-Bunyan was named education minister.

The ministers retaining their positions are the energy minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, foreign minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, minister of interior Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud, minister of finance Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Jadaan and investment minister Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Falih.

Prince Abdullah bin Bandar keeps his position as minister of the national guard, as does Walid Al-Samaani as minister of justice. Abdullatif bin Abdulaziz Al Al-Sheikh will stay on as minister of Islamic affairs. 

Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan will continue as minister of culture, and Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal was reappointed as minister of sports.

Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah retains his role as minister of Hajj and Umrah, while Majid bin Abdullah Al-Qasabi will stay as minister of commerce.
