BP Exploration has awarded Abraj Energy Services a $32 million contract to drill for gas in Oman’s Khazzan field, reinforcing the sultanate’s upstream ambitions amid continued investment in its energy sector.

The three-year contract, disclosed in a filing to the Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX), covers drilling operations on Block 61, a tight gas project in central Oman that currently contributes around 15 percent of the country’s daily gas output.

Abraj, a subsidiary of state-owned OQ, listed nearly half of its capital on the exchange in a $244 million IPO in February 2023. The company provides oilfield services to Oman’s expanding energy industry and has seen rising investor interest as Muscat accelerates upstream development.

Oman is investing heavily in its oil and gas industry. The Gulf Arab state says nearly RO5 billion ($12 billion) was pumped into its hydrocarbon sector last year as it pushed ahead with plans to expand production capacity and boost reserves.

The Sultanate produced nearly a million barrels per day in 2024. It controls around 5.2 billion barrels of proven oil deposits and 25 trillion cubic feet of gas.
