Swiss technology company Hitachi Energy is expanding its operations in Turkey to meet the rising demand for electricity across Europe and Asia.

The company, based in Zurich and a subsidiary of Japanese conglomerate Hitachi Ltd, will invest $70 million to scale up its transformer manufacturing business.

The funds will be used to expand the transformer facility by 45,000 sq m in the Dilovası district of the northwestern province of Turkey, where production capacity is expected to increase by 70 percent.

The expansion will increase the company’s workforce by 30 percent. Hitachi Energy currently employs more than 1,100 people in Turkey.

The project is targeted for completion by 2026.

“The move to the Organized Industrial Zone in Dilovası offers significant advantages, including ease of transportation of transformers due to its proximity to the commercial port,” Carlos Pettinau of Hitachi Energy said in a statement.

The upcoming facility will be an ultra-low-carbon factory, reducing carbon emissions by about 95 percent.

Hitachi Energy currently operates four factories in Turkey.
