Dubai Airports has launched the final phase of its airport-wide lighting retrofit project, which is expected to result in AED20 million ($5.5 million) in cost savings.

In the last phase, more than 180,000 conventional lighting fixtures will be replaced with energy-saving alternatives across Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC), with Concourse A at DXB being the largest single area covered, Dubai Airports said in a statement.

Installation work is scheduled to begin later this year and is expected to be completed by H2 2027.

The first phase of changing 150,000 lighting fixtures at DXB was launched in 2018, with completion by the second half of 2019.

The project will upgrade more than 330,000 lighting units in total, claimed to be the “most extensive” airport lighting retrofit initiative in the region.

The contract was again awarded to Etihad Energy Services Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa).

The project is expected to cut annual energy consumption by 47 million kilowatt-hours, equivalent to powering more than 4,300 homes for an entire year.

“Every kilowatt-hour saved moves us closer to reducing our environmental impact and building a more resilient future,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.
