Oman starts work on new economic zone

A consortium of Omani and Saudi companies has won a consultancy services contract for the first phase of Al Dhahirah governorate’s integrated economic zone.

The contract was awarded by the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), state-run Oman News Agency reported.

Names of the companies in the consortium were not disclosed.

The economic zone spans more than 20 sq km, of which 6.5 sq km will be implemented as the first phase that includes a land port managed and operated by Oman’s Asyad Group.

The remaining land in the zone will be developed as per the future expansion plans, covering all economic sectors.

The contract includes detailed designs for infrastructure facilities, the preparation of tender documents for construction works and the supervision, completion, operation and delivery of the project, said Yahya Khamis Al Zedjali, adviser to Opaz chairman for planning.

It further includes supervising the land port, road networks, electricity and communication services, water and irrigation networks, sewage and gas networks, solid waste management, administrative buildings and landscaping works.

The first phase of the economic zone will cost around OR122 million ($315.5 million), ONA reported last February.
