Sharjah Crown Prince and deputy ruler Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi laid the foundation stone for the project, the UAE state-run Wam news agency reported. Spanning an area of 190,000 sq m, the project is the most extensive among a series of expansion initiatives, collectively valued at AED2.4 billion. In September 2023, Ali Salim Al Midfa, chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority, said the airport will implement several expansion plans to raise its passenger handling capacity to 20 million by 2026 to become one of the top five regional airports. Earlier this week, Sharjah announced its general budget for 2024, with total expenditures amounting to approximately AED40.832 billion, the largest in the emirate’s history. Total expenditure for the year will increase 16 percent, with capital spending to rise 20 percent.
