Jordan’s crude oil output suffered a 50 percent decline year on year in 2023, official data shows.

Oil production fell to just below 44,000 barrels last year, from just below 95,000 barrels in 2022, the Jordan Times reported, quoting from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ annual report.

However, natural gas production rose 14 percent, reaching just over 6 billion cubic feet (bcf) in 2023, up from 5.4 bcf in 2022.

Last year, the country consumed 497,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), 1,320 tonnes of gasoline and 265 tonnes of jet fuel.

However, Jordan imported 1.8 million tonnes of crude oil, 474,000 tonnes of LPG and 41,000 tonnes of jet fuel to meet its energy demand.

Electricity consumption was primarily driven by residential and public buildings, which accounted for 46 percent of the total, followed by the industrial sector at 22 percent and commercial buildings and hotels at 17 percent, the report said.
