Oman launches auction for first green hydrogen land blocks

Hydrom

Oman’s national hydrogen company Hydrom has launched the first round of public auctions of land blocks for developing green hydrogen projects, the company said in a tweet.

The country unveiled its green hydrogen strategy in October and has invited international investors and developers to register for bidding on the first of several land blocks, Oman Daily Observer reported.

The first round of auctions will have two blocks in Duqm, each of around 320 square kilometres (sq km). These are part of six blocks totaling 1,900 sq km, which will be auctioned off as part of phase A of the programme.

Interested developers will receive a request for qualifications in December, leading to a competitive bidding process, with the first land concessions awarded by April 2023.

Oman has earmarked around 50,000 sq km of land for green hydrogen projects over the long term.

In October, Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals unveiled its ‘Green Hydrogen Strategy’, which envisions an estimated $140 billion in investment in a new low-carbon energy industry.

Oman has committed to reaching net-zero emissions in 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement’s objectives of limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels.
