The creek renovation intends to reduce disruptions to commercial traffic caused by flooding or bad weather

Dubai Municipality is undertaking a project to rebuild and rehabilitate parts of the historic Dubai Creek with a total investment of AED112 million ($30.5 million).

The project aims to improve the creek’s retaining walls by upgrading the dock, reconstructing sections that have been damaged and dilapidated over the past 50 years and preventing potential flooding during harsh weather conditions, state-run WAM news agency reported.

Work will be tackled in two phases, with the initial phase involving the restoration of a 2.1 km stretch along the Deira side of Dubai Creek and the second a 2.3 km length on the Bur Dubai side.

The project is scheduled to complete within 14 months.

Dubai Creek plays a key role in driving the economic and social prosperity of the emirate with over 13,000 ships passing through annually.

It is one of the emirate’s most vital historic maritime channels, marking the initiation of the emirate’s trade interactions with the world over a century ago.
