Qatar Fertiliser Company

Qatar Fertiliser Company Overview

Qatar Fertiliser Company (QAFCO) is an ammonia and urea producer.

It has six plants producing 3.8 million metric tonnes (MT) of ammonia and 5.6MT of urea annually, making it the world’s largest single-site exporter of urea with up to 14 percent share of the world’s supply.

QAFCO was established in 1969 as a joint venture between the Qatari government and foreign partners. In about 2009, Yara International Holding took a 25 percent stake and Industries Qatar owned 75 percent.

In 2020 Yara sold its stake to Qatar Petroleum (now Qatar Energy) for $1 billion. Industries Qatar later purchased this stake and QAFCO is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Industries Qatar.

QAFCO is based in the Mesaieed Industrial Area, about 40 kilometers south of Doha. Along with urea, it also produces formaldehyde condensates and melamine.

The company says that it has prioritised environmental, social and governance policies to ensure it aligns with Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and has taken initiatives to improve its energy efficiency and reduce its environmental impact.
