State-backed Iraqi Airways will add new Boeing and Airbus aircraft by 2027 as part of its fleet modernisation.

The airline will receive eight B787-8 Dreamliner and 10 737 Max aircraft, bringing the total number of modern aircraft to 31 over the next two years, the state-run Iraqi News Agency reported, citing a transport ministry statement.

The carrier has received 13 new aircraft and 14 grounded have been returned to service, the report said.

These 13 aircraft include five Airbus A220 aircraft, six 737 Max aircraft, and two B787-8, said transport ministry spokesman Maitham Al-Safi.

Iraqi Airway owns 39 aircraft. Established in 1945, it is one of the oldest airlines in the Middle East. The carrier has faced numerous challenges over the decades arising from conflict and instability in Iraq and economic sanctions.

In July 2024 Iraqi Airways resumed direct flights from Baghdad to Beijing, ending a hiatus that lasted several years.

Last year Iraq moved a step closer to returning its flag carrier to European skies after receiving the support of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
