State-owned Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) and Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company (Tadweer), the waste management company for Abu Dhabi, have received proposals for the development of the greenfield Abu Dhabi waste-to-energy independent power project (IPP).

The proposals were received from a Japan-based consortium comprised of Marubeni Corporation, Hitachi Zosen Inova AG and Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development, and a consortium consisting of Suez International and PAL Cooling Holding.

The project will have an expected annual processing capacity of 900,000 tonnes of waste, enabling an estimated carbon emissions reduction of 1.1 million tonnes per year, state-run WAM news agency reported.

The facility will likely generate enough electricity to power up to 52,500 households.

Othman Al Ali, CEO of Ewec, said the company had received competitive bids for the project as it explores opportunities to contribute to its transition into a circular economy.

Ali Al Dhaheri, CEO of Tadweer, added the companies will continue launching major projects that focus on converting waste into value.

Earlier, Ewec received a total of 109 expressions of interest from potential bidders for the project. The request for proposal was issued to bidders who passed the qualification process in July 2022.

The project award and concession agreement will be signed in Q3 2023.

The waste-to-energy project has a target commercial operation date of Q4 2026, the report said.
