Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed has passed away

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the second President of the United Arab Emirates and 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi, died today aged 73.

In a statement published by Wam, The Ministry of Presidential Affairs expressed its deepest condolences to the people of the UAE, Arab and Islamic nations and the world.

The Ministry of Presidential Affairs has announced the start of official mourning for a period of 40 days, and flags will fly at half-mast.

The government has also mandated three days closure of ministries and official entities at the federal and local levels and the private sector, said Wam.

Sheikh Nahyan, whose full name is Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan bin Zayed bin Khalifa bin Shakhbout bin Theyab bin Issa bin Nahyan bin Falah bin Yas, led the UAE since the passing of Founding Father Sheikh Zayed in 2004.

He is survived by his wife Sheikha Shamsa bint Suhail Al Mazrouei. He has eight children.

Regional condolences

Heads of state from the region and around the world have offered their condolences on the passing of the UAE President.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, shared his condolences online.

“The UAE lost its righteous son, the leader of the ’empowerment stage’ and the trustee of its blessed journey,” Sheikh Mohamed wrote.

“His stances, achievements, wisdom, giving and initiatives are in every corner of the country.”

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, wrote: “It is with great sorrow and grief that we mourn to the UAE people, Arab and Islamic nations and the world the death of President of our country Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the leader of our journey.”
