The EcoCloud-G42 mega data centre will have an initial capacity of 100MW, with the potential to build up to 1GW

Abu Dhabi artificial intelligence company G42 has said it will develop a one-gigawatt (GW) data centre in Kenya powered by geothermal energy.

The new facility, developed in partnership with Kenya’s EcoCloud, will boost cloud computing and AI services, the Abu Dhabi Media Office reported, citing a company statement.

The EcoCloud-G42 mega data centre will have an initial capacity of 100 megawatts, with the potential to build up to 1 GW.

The project is intended to cut fossil fuel dependence and carbon emissions by using the earth’s heat to generate power. Kenya’s geothermal energy potential is estimated at 10GW.

“This geothermal-powered data centre is a milestone towards realising Kenya’s potential as a global digital hub,” said Peng Xiao, group CEO of G42.

“By harnessing the power of geothermal energy, we are meeting the region’s data needs and setting a new standard for eco-friendly infrastructure,” Amos Siwoi, CEO of EcoCloud, added.
