The total anticipated benefits of the 30-km Metro Blue Line project are anticipated to exceed AED56.5bn by 2040

The Dubai government has approved the expansion of the world’s largest driverless metro line, expecting a surge in the resident population to more than one million under its 2040 urban master plan.

The 30-km Metro Blue Line project, approved by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler, will have 14 stations and is scheduled for completion in 2029, the UAE state-run Wam news agency reported.

The project will be build at the cost of AED18 billion ($4.90 billion).

The Blue Line will be the first metro route crossing Dubai Creek through a 1,300-metre viaduct.

The new line will be a key integration point between the Red and Green Lines of Dubai Metro.

The new line will directly connect Dubai International Airport and nine key areas along the line, namely Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City 1 and 2, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, Dubai Creek Harbour and Dubai Festival City.

The travel time between these destinations is anticipated to range from 10 to 25 minutes.

The Blue Line consists of nine elevated stations and five underground stations. It is anticipated to serve 200,000 passengers daily by 2030, increasing to 320,000 by 2040.

Upon the completion of the new metro line, Dubai’s total railway network will extend from 101 km to 131 km. This includes 120 km for the Dubai Metro and 11 km for Dubai Tram.

The total anticipated benefits are anticipated to exceed AED56.5 billion ($15.38 billion) by 2040.

It will also decrease traffic congestion on its served routes by 20 percent and appreciate the value of land and properties near stations by up to 25 percent.
