The first set of wind turbines that will power the world’s largest green hydrogen plant in Saudi Arabia have been delivered.

Neom Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) received its first delivery of wind turbines at the Port of Neom in the northwest of the kingdom last month, it was announced this week.

The turbines are being transported via road to the wind garden site near the Gulf of Aqaba, where they will be assembled and installed.

More turbines are expected to be delivered by the end of the year, with the site featuring more than 250 turbines to directly power the green hydrogen plant via an electricity transmission grid.

The green hydrogen facility in Oxagon, Neom’s industrial city, will use four gigawatts (GWs) of solar and wind energy to produce up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen per day.

David Edmondson, chief executive of NGHC, said the company will start exporting green hydrogen in 2026.

“Our teams and contractors are fully deployed on-ground and with a series of equipment deliveries continuing in the coming months, the sites are really starting to take shape,” added Wolfgang Brand, vice president, Neom Green Hydrogen Project, Air Products.

Air Products is the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project.

China-based Envision Energy is manufacturing the wind turbines for the facility.

NGHC is an equal joint venture among Acwa Power, Air Products and Neom. In May 2023, it achieved full financial close at a total investment value of $8.4 billion, including $6.1 billion in financing from 23 local, regional, and international banks and financial institutions.

The company has signed a 30-year off-take agreement with Air Products for all the green ammonia produced at the facility.

The hydrogen rainbow

  • Green hydrogen is produced on a carbon-neutral basis through water electrolysis.
  • Turquoise hydrogen is created when natural gas is broken down into hydrogen and solid carbon with the help of methane pyrolysis.
  • Blue hydrogen is generated from the steam reduction of natural gas.
  • Grey hydrogen is obtained by steam reforming fossil fuels such as natural gas or coal.
  • Sometimes other colours are ascribed to hydrogen, based on how it is produced. For red, pink and violet hydrogen, the electrolysers are driven by nuclear power.
  • Yellow hydrogen is hydrogen produced from a mixture of renewable energies and fossil fuels.
  • White hydrogen is a waste product of other chemical processes, while the use of coal as a fuel produces brown hydrogen.
