Oman and IEA working on three green hydrogen projects

Oman News Agency
Green hydrogen is likely to help attract large investments in Oman

Oman and Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA) are working on three joint projects to develop and enhance green hydrogen projects in the sultanate, according to a local media report.

Dr Abdullah bin Sulaiman al Abri, advisor and representative of Oman at IEA, said that the first project is to develop green hydrogen markets for energy and local industry uses, reducing dependence on natural gas and providing for the development of other industrial projects that raise the economic value, Oman Daily Observer reported.

The second project is to build local capabilities in green hydrogen production and to benefit from the infrastructure Oman possesses in the oil, gas, ports, and spot electricity market.

The third project, likely to be completed by 2023,  is to build a system that simulates the state’s total income, to allow the government to plan resource needs for the future.

The report said other projects have been discussed with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, such as ways to store renewable energy.

It also includes discussing opportunities for localising supply chains and ways of cooperation with Tanmia, Oman Energy, or Oman Investment Authority.

“Oman has been successful in this (green hydrogen) field, and, with the country’s determination to invest in this sector, it is expected that it will contribute to attracting large investments that will enhance efforts in the field of production and export of green hydrogen,” Al Abri said.
