Kuwait is committed to becoming carbon neutral in the oil and gas sector by 2050 and across the country by 2060, foreign minister Salem Al-Sabah told state news agency Kuna.

The minister said Kuwait’s plan, a major oil exporter and member of Opec, to achieve carbon neutrality is “a solid and serious commitment to which we will commit”.

Kuwait has executed many projects to preserve the environment and reduce emissions, Al-Sabah said.

He added that Kuwait has stuck to all the commitments it made since the launch of the first climate conference in Brazil in 1992 to the Paris conference in 2015.

Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah affirmed the country’s commitment to regional and international environmental resolutions and initiatives at the Green Initiative for the Middle East Summit held on the sidelines of Cop27.

The Middle East Green Initiative was launched by Saudi Crown Mohammed bin Salman last year to reduce regional carbon emissions.
