Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has signed two contracts worth 642 million riyals ($171 million) with major contractors to deepen berths and build new ones at Jeddah Islamic Port, according to the state-owned Saudi Press Agency.

The contract with Modern Building Leaders, in association with Huta Hegerfeld Saudia, will deepen harbour approach channels, turning basins, waterways and the south terminal basin.

These upgrades will enable the arrival of large vessels with a capacity of up to 24,000 twenty-foot-equivalent-unit, as well as attracting new global shipping lines.

The second contract, with PC Marine Services, will allow the construction of new berths, measuring 16 metres deep and 1,100 metres long, at the multi-cargo terminals, to receive large bulk grain carriers.

In the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index for 2021, King Abdullah Port took the first spot among 370 ports.

Jeddah Islamic Port was placed eighth and King Abdulaziz Port, Dammam was No 14 on the index, the news agency said.
