Egypt’s tourism sector will get a major boost with the opening of a $1 billion antiquities museum following decades of development.

The Grand Egyptian Museum, which is located nearly 2km from the Giza Pyramids, will open on July 3, Bloomberg reported, quoting prime minister Mostafa Madbouly.

The museum, construction of which started in 2005, is expected to attract 5 million annual visitors.

Covering 120 acres, the attraction, billed as “the world’s largest archaeological museum”, will display 100,000 artifacts, including items from King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

The museum was first slated to open in late 2020 but faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the report said.

The Egyptian pound’s nearly 40 percent depreciation against the dollar since March 2024 has potentially created travel bargains for overseas travellers, the news agency reported citing authorities.

This month, the government said tourism revenues more than doubled to $15.3 billion in 2024 compared to $7.2 billion in 2014 amid a major overhaul of the industry.

Inbound tourist numbers rose by 60 percent to 15.8 million last year from 9.9 million in 2014.
