Oman’s luxury hotels continued to make money in April as the number of guests surged.

The revenue of three- to five-star hotels rose 11 percent year on year to OMR93 million ($242 million), the state-run Oman News Agency said, quoting the National Centre for Statistics and Information data.

The revenue increase was driven by a 15 percent year-on-year rise in hotel guest numbers to 767,900 by the end of April.

Room bookings by Omanis rose 10 percent year on year to 241,058, while Asian guests jumped 23 percent annually.

European hotel arrivals reached 262,651.

The number of guests from GCC countries rose by 8 percent to 47,809. However, African and Oceanian guests fell by 0.8 percent and 28 percent, respectively.

In 2016 Oman launched a 25-year strategy to increase the number of tourists more than fourfold, from 2.6 million in 2015 to nearly 12 million a year by 2040.

The Gulf nation wants to increase tourism’s contribution to GDP from 2.6 percent to 6 percent by building hotels and promoting destination “clusters”.
