The project, located close to Sohar Port, will have a processing capacity of 200 metric tonnes per day, the Oman Daily Observer reported. The volume of recyclable waste, including plastics, produced in the sultanate stood at 2.3 million tonnes annually, Times of Oman reported in March 2023. Recycling will generate revenues worth OMR530 million ($1.4 billion). Plastics produced globally every year has soared over the past half century, from 15 million tonnes in 1964 to more than 300 million tonnes today, AGBI reported in August 2022. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, packaging accounts for a quarter of the world’s total plastics output, and about 40 percent is sent to landfills. Another 14 percent is incinerated, while 32 percent ends up in the natural environment. Less than 15 percent is collected for recycling.
