Egypt aims to raise its renewable energy share to 42 percent of total power generation by 2030 and 65 percent by 2040

The UAE renewable energy company Amea Power has signed an agreement with the state-run Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company to develop two battery storage facilities with a total capacity of up to 1,500 megawatt-hours (MWh).

The project involves a 1,000 MWh station at Benban in the far south of Egypt and a 500 MWh facility at Zafarana on the Rea Sea coast, the government-owned State Information Service reported.

Together, both can store sufficient energy to power homes for 1.6 million people.

New transformer stations will also be built and integrated with the national power grid to raise the daily contribution of renewable energy.

Egypt’s electricity and renewable energy minister, Mahmoud Esmat, said that deploying battery storage was central to the country’s strategy to maximise renewable energy potential.

The project is meamt to meet peak energy demand and stabilise the grid as more solar and wind power is added.

Esmat said Egypt aims to raise its renewable energy share to 42 percent of total power generation by 2030, and 65 percent by 2040.

Amea Power is a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi concern Al Nowais Investments, which controls and manages a portfolio of companies in the oil, chemicals, hospitality and infrastructure sectors.
