Dubai is working on the sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park – the largest single-site solar park in the world – as it works toward its 2050 energy diversity target.

The emirate launched the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy in November 2015, with the aim of producing 75 percent of its energy requirements from cleaner sources by 2050. It set a target for solar energy to account for 25 percent of total energy capacity.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), told a conference on Thursday that solar energy accounted for 17.8 percent of Dubai’s energy mix in 2024.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, launched in 2012, plays an integral part in achieving the 2050 target.

The aim is for it to generate 5,000 megawatts (MW) of clean energy by 2030. Al Tayer said that capacity from the first five phases reached 3,060 MW by the end of 2024.

“Five phases are complete, with the sixth under construction and the seventh at the planning stage,” Al Tayer said.

Dewa is developing the 1,800 MW sixth phase under the independent power producer model – under which private entities generate power for sale to the national grid – with investments of up to AED5.5 billion ($1.5 billion).

Once completed in 2026, it will bring total capacity to 4,660 MW.

Dewa partnered with Abu Dhabi’s Masdar for the project, which will provide power for 540,000 homes and cut 2.36 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Under Dewa’s implementation of the independent power producer model, total planned investments in the solar park are expected to reach AED50 billion.

Al Tayer was speaking at the Marsh Energy Industry Conference in Dubai.
