Of 1.35 million working Omanis, about 12 percent earn a minimum wage, according to official statistics. In 2022, the government raised the minimum wage from $815 to $1,000 per month. Most minimum-wage earners live in smaller towns in regions such as Dakhiliyah, Batinah and Sharqiyah. The project includes the construction of roads, schools and hospitals. The project will be financed by the Department of Social Protection, which last year was allocated $1.7 billion to support minimum-wage earners, as well as orphans, people with disabilities, unemployed divorced women and widows.
