Tesla sales in Turkey surpassed those of the local brand Togg in June, following the introduction of a model tailored for the Turkish market.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker sold 2,670 units of the Model Y RWD sport-utility vehicle (SUV), designed to avoid high taxes on vehicles exceeding 160 kilowatts of power, the Daily Sabah newspaper reported, quoting data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association.

Tesla sold 412 units in the first five months of 2024, with a mere 10 units in May.

Despite Togg selling 1,733 T10X SUVs last month, the Turkish EV maker sold 13,021 units in the first half of 2024, making up over 36 percent of all EV sales in the country.

BMW follows with 3,808 units sold, while Tesla ranked third with 3,082 sales.

In April, Tesla introduced a Model Y variant with a single motor and a power output under 160KW, placing it in the 10 percent special consumption tax bracket. The tailored model is the company’s most affordable option in Turkey.

The special consumption tax for EVs ranges between 10 and 60 percent based on motor power and vehicle price.

The RWD model is priced around 1.8 million lira ($55,000), nearly half the cost of Tesla’s LR AWD model.

Overall, passenger and light commercial vehicle sales declined by 5.3 percent year on year in June to 106,238 units, a third consecutive monthly drop.

However, EV sales hit 8,032 units last month, surging over 143 percent year on year. Sales climbed by 223 percent to 35,636 units from January to June, the report said.

Turkey saw a ninefold jump in EV sales last year, with 65,562 units sold, making up 6.8 percent of the total auto market.
