German consumer goods group Henkel has opened a beauty care production facility in Riyadh amid a localisation drive by the Saudi government.

The facility in Riyadh will produce a range of products under the Pert brand, including shampoos, conditioners and other specialised items.

No details were given on the production capacity and cost of the facility.

The plant incorporates the latest water treatment technology designed to minimise water waste and sustainable practices to significantly improve energy efficiency.

“Saudi Arabia is a very important market for us. Investing in localising our production in Riyadh allows us to expand our portfolio with Pert hair care products,” said Irina Eliseeva, general manager, Henkel Consumer Brands.

Henkel is already producing Abaya shampoos, gel and powder detergents, DAC disinfectants and home cleaning products in the kingdom.

The company began operations in the GCC in 1998, with corporate headquarters in Dubai. It has two regional innovation centres and one adhesive technologies factory in the UAE.

Henkel operates one factory for laundry and home care products in Riyadh and two factories for adhesive technologies in Dammam.

In 2022, Henkel reported more than €22 billion ($24 billion) in sales and an adjusted operating profit of around €2.3 billion.

The Mena cosmetics industry is valued at more than $40 billion, Eliseeva added.

It is expected to grow by 12 percent annually to 2027, outstripping the global growth forecast of 6 percent, Malina Ngai, CEO, AS Watson (Asia & Europe), told AGBI in February.
