Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Holding, a global investment conglomerate owned by Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, will undertake major road works in five major developments to try and cut travel times by more than half.

The AED6 billion ($1.6 billion) road upgrades will be carried out in Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC), Dubai Production City, Business Bay and International City (Phase 3), Dubai Media Office said in a statement.

Infrastructure in the commercial capital of the Gulf is under increasing pressure from rapid population growth, increasing tourist numbers and ambitious property development.

Four additional access points will be developed for JVC, which aims to double the capacity of entry and exit points and reduce travel time on internal roads and access points by 70 percent.

Additionally, new bridges will be constructed to improve access to Dubai Production City from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, improving traffic flow on internal roads by 50 percent.

Surface improvement will be undertaken at intersections leading to Business Bay from Sheikh Zayed Road.

Moreover, Palm Jumeirah will see the construction of additional acceleration and deceleration lanes spanning six locations to try to ease traffic flow by 40 percent. Two pedestrian bridges will also be built.

Entrance into International City (Phase 3) from Manama Street will get a new lane, and internal roads will be widened. These improvements are aimed at reducing travel time from 15 minutes to five minutes.
