Saudi Arabia’s Neom is setting up a new ready-mix concrete complex to primarily serve The Line, its desert city.

The giga-project developer has tied up with Asas Al-Mohileb, a local construction and engineering company, to establish and operate a SAR700 million ($186 million) green concrete plant, which will produce more than 20,000 cubic metres per day.

The delivery of these concrete plants shows the rapid progress at Neom, CEO Nadhmi Al-Nasr said.

With concrete being a core material for The Line’s substructure and superstructure, the new factory has mobilised a fleet of support vehicles in readiness for operations to commence next month.

Peak operations are anticipated to start next year, with the facility expected to generate more than 500 local jobs. Moreover, the plants will incorporate carbon capture and utilisation technology and energy-saving solutions.

The plant is being set up as construction on The Line moves progresses. Work on the foundation piles has begun, with nearly 1,000 out of more than 30,000 piles placed so far.

In April, Neom confirmed that the pace of construction on the $500 billion giga-project will accelerate, with the workforce rising by almost half by next year.

The Line, to be built in modular phases, is scheduled to open its first phase in 2030.

The developer secured new funding in April as the kingdom’s officials admit some of its Vision 2030 projects may have to be scaled back.

In September, rating agency S&P said the kingdom is expected to see a pick-up in construction for its Vision 2030 projects and the services sector, driven by rising consumer demand and a growing workforce.
