Company Insights QatarEnergy LNG Oil & Gas QatarEnergy LNG Overview The world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) company, QatarEnergy LNG was formerly known as Qatargas. Established in 1984 it has a total annual production capacity of 77 million tonnes, making it the largest LNG producer in the world. Majority-owned by QatarEnergy, QatarEnergy LNG is based in Doha and has upstream assets in Ras Laffan. Natural gas is supplied to QatarEnergy LNG from Qatar’s North Field, which is jointly owned by Qatar and Iran. It plans to expand LNG production at its North Field site by 85 percent, from 77 million tonnes per year (mtpa) to 142 mtpa by 2030. The North Field is considered the largest single non-associated gas reservoir in the world, covering an area of 6,000 sq km, equivalent to about half of Qatar’s land area. QatarEnergy LNG executed the first two major sales and purchase agreements with eight Japanese customers in 1992 and 1994. By 2000,10 million tonnes of LNG had been delivered to Japan since shipment commenced in 1996. In 2008 two agreements were signed with PetroChina, (3 million tonnes per year over 25 years), and 2 million tonnes per year over 25 years with China National Offshore Oil Corporation – about 2 million tonnes per year. Qatargas changed its name to QatarEnergy LNG in September 2023.
