The company has headquarters in Abu Dhabi and branch offices in Dubai, Ajman, Al Ain and Northern Emirates. NMC Healthcare serves about 5.4 million patients annually through its large network of 11 hospitals, 54 community clinics and specialty care centres and 1,400 in-patient hospital beds. NMC Healthcare was founded by BR Shetty in 1974 as the New Medical Centre in Abu Dhabi. It is one of the largest private healthcare networks in the United Arab Emirates and the third largest in Oman. NMC Healthcare, which used to be listed in London, ran into trouble in 2020. It went into administration after it disclosed more than $4 billion in hidden debt. Administrators filed a $4 billion lawsuit in July 2023 against BR Shetty and its former chief executive related to these allegations. In March 2022, the core operations of NMC Healthcare Group exited administration in the UAE, creating a new holding company. Following legal approvals, 34 NMC operating companies completed a “deed of company arrangement” restructuring process under the auspices of Abu Dhabi Global Market and are now subsidiaries of a new company, NMC OpCo Ltd. In March 2024 NMC reached an out-of-court settlement with Dubai Islamic Bank, ending a long-running legal dispute with the lender.
