Company Insights National Iranian Oil Company National Iranian Oil Company Overview The National Iranian Oil Company is the country’s state-owned gas and oil producer. It was founded in 1951 by the then Majles (national consultative assembly) and then prime minister Mohammad Mossadegh. Iran has 208.6 billion barrels of proven oil reserves according to 2023 figures from Opec. In 2022, the National Iranian Oil Company’s CEO said the country had 1.2 trillion barrels of [unproven] oil and gas reserves, according to its estimates. The National Iranian Oil Company has a number of subsidiaries with associated functions in procurement, manufacturing, research, drilling, trading, tanker fleet and oilfield operations. The company operates onshore fields located mainly in the south-western Khuzestan region of Iran, near the Iraqi border. Its offshore fields are located in the Arabian Gulf and the Caspian Sea.
