Company Insights Etihad Rail Transport Etihad Rail Overview Etihad Rail, founded in 2009, is the UAE’s national railway developer and operator. Its network spans key UAE ports, industrial centres, and all seven emirates, with planned connections to neighbouring GCC countries. Aligned with the UAE’s Vision 2021 and Abu Dhabi’s Economic Vision 2030, Etihad Rail promotes diversification and improved connectivity. The railway’s development is progressing in phases. Stage One, operational since 2016, links the inland gas fields of Liwa and Shah to Ruwais port, handling up to 22,000 tonnes of sulphur daily. Stage Two, completed in early 2023, extends 605km from the Saudi border to Fujairah. A future Stage Three will expand 279km to link Dubai to Fujairah and Ras al-Khaimah. The network is designed to reduce environmental impact by cutting road transport emissions, with Etihad Rail saying that each train replaces about 300 trucks, saving more than 2.2 million tonnes of CO2 annually. Strategically located freight facilities and a central operations hub in Al Faya support its operations. Hafeet Rail, Etihad Rail’s joint venture with Oman Rail, aims to further regional integration by establishing a state-of-the-art 300km route connecting Abu Dhabi with the port of Sohar in Oman.
