Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation Overview

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (Enec) runs the UAE’s nuclear energy plants.

Established by decree in December 2009, Enec is tasked with meeting the growing demand for electricity.

In February 2020, Enec subsidiary Nawah Energy Company received its operating licence from the Federal Authority of Nuclear Regulation – making the UAE the first country in the Arab region to operate a nuclear power plant.

The Barakah nuclear energy plant is located in the Al Dhafra area of Abu Dhabi on the Arabian Gulf, approximately 53km from Al Dhannah.

The plant’s four nuclear reactors produce 40 terawatt-hours annually, which is equivalent to about 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs. It is the largest source of energy for the UAE.

Subsidiaries include Enec Operations, Enec Commercial and Nawah Energy Company.
