Morocco will invest MAD42 billion ($4.1 billion) in airport expansion by 2030, the country’s transport and logistics minister has said.

The investment aligns with the strategy to strengthen the country’s airports as a global gateway, Morocco World News reported citing Abdessamad Kayouh.

The investments intend to modernise major airports, including Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Marrakesh, Fez, Tetouan and Agadir.

The Casablanca airport will be upgraded to accommodate 44 million passengers annually, while a new terminal with capacity for four million passengers each year will be built at Rabat-Sale, the report said.

Royal Air Maroc, Morocco’s largest airline, will also expand its fleet to meet the rising travel demand. The larger fleet will support a broader route network and build domestic connectivity.

In December 2024, prime minister Aziz Akhannouch said Morocco aims to double its passenger capacity from 38 million to nearly 80 million by 2030.

The country has reported a 20 percent year-on-year increase in tourists through to the end of November, welcoming close to 16 million visitors.

The Moroccan government has set a target of 17.5 million annual visitors by 2026, increasing to 26 million by 2030, when the country co-hosts the Fifa World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
