Saudi Arabia sets rules for rollout of EV charging stations

The move aims to ensure the effectiveness and safety of EV charging stations and their compliance with the Saudi Arabian Distribution Code.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy launched the regulations for the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, according to a local media report.

A team at the Ministry of Energy has completed work related to the legislative, organisational and technical aspects to regulating the EV charging market, Saudi Gazette newspaper reported, citing the ministry.

The move aims to ensure the effectiveness and safety of EV charging stations and their compliance with the Saudi Arabian Distribution Code.

According to the newspaper report, the Water and Electricity Regulatory Authority recently issued the regulatory framework for activity related to the charging EVs.

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing has issued the technical requirements for EV chargers related to regulations and licenses for sites and their requirements, as well as the integration of services and surveys.

Saudi Electricity Company has set the mechanism for receiving requests for the delivery of electric power to EV chargers for those seeking to operate or invest in these stations, the newspaper said.

In May, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih said US-based Lucid Group is planning to build at least three manufacturing plants in the kingdom.

The company has already revealed plans to build an EV production hub in Saudi Arabia, which will have an annual capacity of 155,000 vehicles and help create 4,500 new jobs.
