Morocco’s farming exports rise 13%, despite drought challenges

Exports of garden products reached more than 1.6 million tonnes during the season, up 13 percent year-on-year.

Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has said that the volume of its exports increased by 13 percent in 2021-2022, with tomatoes and berries rising by 19 percent and 18 percent, respectively, according to a local newspaper.

Exports of garden products reached more than 1.6 million tonnes during the season, up 13 percent year-on-year, Morocco World News reported, citing a ministry statement.

The season extends from September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022.

Tomato exports reached 670,000 tonnes, while the volume of exported berries stood at 125,400 tonnes.

The newspaper said Morocco suffered its worst drought in three decades, as farmers struggled and drinking water rationed in some parts of the country.

The ministry had predicted earlier that the added value of Morocco’s agriculture to fall by 14 percent by year-end.
